Campervans

What self-respecting hippy would be without his or her campervan? The VW microbus, an icon of the sixties and the free love movement, remains nearly in production to this day. The problem with being a hippy is that you will generally be broke, and that doesn’t normally allow you to run a vehicle like the microbus. Apart from the initial investment (over twenty thousand pounds for a new one) the wannabe hippy will then have to pay for fuel, road tax, maintenance and of course campervan insurance.

With all this in mind, it’s not surprising to think that most hippies now drive Volvo estates with three kids and two Labradors in the back. Still, there’s plenty of room for adventurers in modern life. The feeling of the open road stretching away in front of you, the limitless freedom, and of course the prospect of a nice cup of tea and a reasonably comfortable bed when you reach your so-called destination… There’s a lot to be said for spending time in a campervan. There’s more to be said for booking hotels in advance, but you’re still tied to that destination without much opportunity to explore the area independently.

In order to fully explore Britain and Europe especially, road travel is the easiest. Although there are very good public transport networks all over the continent, nothing beats being able to just pull up and make camp with the minimum of fuss. Instead of going to a restaurant, just go to the supermarket; buy some sauerkraut or some cassoulet and cook it in your campervan. After all, home is where you park it.
